The mission, which lasted about 6.5 hours, was crucially aimed at making critical repairs to scientific and navigation equipment. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Critical repairs for astronauts trapped on the ISS<\/h2>\n\n<p>During the spacewalk, the duo worked on replacing a gyroscope essential for controlling the ISS&#8217;s orientation. They also installed protective patches on light filters on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/nicer\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/nicer\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NICER telescope<\/a><\/strong> , which studies neutron stars.   <\/p>\n\n<p>They also replaced a key navigation reflector device on the international docking adapters. Source: NASA<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An unexpected extended trip<\/h2>\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/people\/sunita-l-williams\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/people\/sunita-l-williams\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Suni Williams<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/people\/barry-butch-e-wilmore\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/people\/barry-butch-e-wilmore\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Butch Wilmore<\/a><\/strong> were scheduled to depart for the ISS in June 2024 aboard Boeing&#8217;s Starliner for an eight-day mission. However, technical problems with the ship&#8217;s thrusters forced the team to return the Starliner to Earth remotely, <strong>extending the astronauts&#8217; stay to nearly ten months<\/strong> . <\/p>\n\n<p>Despite the challenges, Williams and her team have played a vital role on the station, contributing to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/robot-sent-to-the-eei-operations-space\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"128263\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">science experiments<\/a><\/strong> , routine maintenance and preparations for future missions.
