A new study conducted by the University of Turku in Finland has revealed that using dishwashing detergent to clean solar panels can be counterproductive<\/strong> . Solar panels<\/a><\/strong> rely on high light transmittance to maximize solar radiation absorption and, therefore, their energy efficiency. Research showed that while most cleaners such as isopropanol and glass cleaners are safe, dishwashing detergent leaves residues that reduce glass efficiency<\/strong> , even after thorough rinsing. <\/p>\n\n

Solar panels typically feature an anti-reflective coating that improves light absorption. According to the researchers, this coating was not significantly damaged<\/a><\/strong> by cleaning, except when dishwashing detergent was used<\/strong> . This highlights the need to choose appropriate products to maintain the integrity of solar modules<\/a><\/strong> . <\/p>\n\n

Recommendations for optimal maintenance<\/h2>\n\n

The study, presented at the European Solar Photovoltaics Conference, warns against using aggressive methods such as pressure washers or abrasive brushes when cleaning solar panels<\/a><\/strong> . Instead, it recommends opting for specialized products or mild cleaners<\/strong> that do not compromise the transmittance or coating of the glass. <\/p>\n\n

The research is part of the RealSolar project<\/a><\/strong> , which aims to optimise the integration of solar energy<\/a><\/strong> into Finland’s energy system and provide practical insights for an efficient energy transition.<\/p>\n\n
