As part of an innovative project, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/the-wood-satelite-lignosat-is-ready\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/noticias\/el-satelite-de-madera-lignosat-esta-listo\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">JAXA has chosen to use honoki magnolia wood<\/a><\/strong> , known for its durability and strength, which has been subjected to an assembly process inspired by Japanese carpentry techniques. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why wood in space?<\/h2>\n\n<p>Research into the use of organic materials in space arises in response to growing environmental challenges and the need to explore sustainable solutions for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/video-tv\/el-primer-satelite-de-madera-en-orbita\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/video-tv\/el-primer-satelite-de-madera-en-orbita\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">space exploration<\/a><\/strong> . LignoSat <strong>seeks to evaluate the structural capabilities of wood<\/strong> and also how it behaves under extreme conditions of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/nasa-radiation-and-particle-bombardment\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"151718\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">radiation<\/a><\/strong> , temperature and pressure, common characteristics in outer space. <\/p>\n\n<p>Researchers are carefully monitoring the levels of cosmic radiation and geomagnetism to which wood is exposed, in order to understand whether these factors can affect the physical properties of the material. Source: NASA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Challenges and opportunities with the wooden satellite<\/h2>\n\n<p>Although conventional materials such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/american-aluminum-market-castings\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"132045\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aluminium<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/articulo\/properties-titanium-and-its-applications\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"articulo\" data-id=\"188643\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">titanium<\/a><\/strong> are highly effective for satellite construction, <strong>their production comes at a high environmental cost<\/strong> . Using wood could open up new possibilities in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/repsol-and-pld-space-develop-renewable-fuels-for-spacecraft\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"57162\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reducing the carbon footprint of the space industry<\/a><\/strong> , especially if the LignoSat results confirm that this material is suitable for withstanding the extreme conditions of space. <\/p>\n\n<p>This experiment also marks the beginning of a new era in satellite manufacturing, where sustainability would be an added value and a fundamental priority.
