In a move to strengthen its commitment to sustainability, Hydro Energi has signed a long-term power purchase agreement with Axpo Nordic<\/strong> . This agreement, which will come into force in 2026, guarantees the supply of 2.63 TWh of renewable electricity<\/a><\/strong> annually for a period of ten years. The electricity supplied will come from clean sources in Sweden\u2019s SE2 price zone, covering part of the energy needs of Hydro\u2019s aluminium plants in Norway. <\/p>\n\n

Hydro’s electricity contract reduces carbon footprint in aluminum<\/h2>\n\n

The deal is not only key for Hydro, but also for its goal of maintaining its leading position in low-carbon aluminium production<\/a><\/strong> globally. The Norwegian company has committed to reducing its carbon footprint, with this renewable energy supply being an important step towards its net-zero emissions roadmap for 2050. <\/p>\n\n

Today, aluminium production in Norway has a carbon footprint that is approximately 75% lower than the global average<\/strong> , making Hydro a benchmark for sustainability within the industry.<\/p>\n\n

Strategic importance of the contract<\/h2>\n\n

Long-term contracts such as this one are essential for Hydro to maintain the stability of its energy supply and continue its environmental commitment. The company already manages a captive production of 9.4 TWh annually, and this new contract with Axpo will increase its renewable energy portfolio to approximately 10 TWh<\/a><\/strong> , ensuring that its operations continue efficiently and sustainably in the future. <\/p>\n\n

With some existing agreements set to expire at the end of 2030, Hydro is forced to explore new renewable energy options, and this agreement is a key part of its strategy to meet its growing energy demands. Indeed, clean energy is becoming a fundamental pillar for all of Hydro\u2019s operations globally, consolidating its commitment to responsible aluminium production. <\/p>\n\n
