Published in the journal <em>Advanced Science<\/em> , this breakthrough could change the approach to designing robots for critical applications, such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/humanoid-ironcub3-superhero-for-disasters\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"183515\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rescue operations<\/a><\/strong> in rough terrain. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beetle robot masters manipulation in extreme terrain<\/h2>\n\n<p>Dung beetles are fascinating for their ability <strong>to carry objects much larger than themselves<\/strong> . <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/noticias\/cientificos-desarrollan-robots-voladores-del-tamano-de-insectos-sin-motores-ni-engranajes\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/noticias\/cientificos-desarrollan-robots-voladores-del-tamano-de-insectos-sin-motores-ni-engranajes\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inspired by this insect<\/a><\/strong> , researchers Binggwong Leung, Stanislav Gorb and Poramate Manoonpong studied their biomechanics in detail. Most notably, the beetles use a unique method: they wrap their upper legs around the object and use their lower legs to propel it. This detail was key to designing a robot with similar capabilities.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Instead of opting for machine learning, as is common in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/nvidia-pulses-humanoid-robotics\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"176120\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">advanced robotics<\/a><\/strong> , the scientists applied a modular control system. <strong>This design was based on just two behaviors: roll and pitch<\/strong> , which simplified the robot&#8217;s control without sacrificing its efficiency. Dubbed ALPHA, the robot proved capable of moving a large hollow ball and also transporting materials inside it. <\/p>\n\n<p>The research team notes that this technology <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/advs.202408080\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/advs.202408080\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has promising applications in search and rescue tasks<\/a><\/strong> , thanks to the robot&#8217;s ability to traverse difficult terrain and move effectively in tight spaces.
