This electric superhighway will transport 2 gigawatts of wind energy, helping to reduce consumer bills and strengthen energy security. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advances in the &#8220;electric highway&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n<p>The <strong>National Energy System Operator<\/strong> ( <em>NESO<\/em> ) has identified EGL1 as a key component in the roadmap to a clean energy system by 2030. With the capacity to power millions of homes, the project will incentivise the transition to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/the-biggest-bess-project-in-eastern-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"175983\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">renewable energy<\/a><\/strong> . The majority of the cable will be installed under the North Sea, with the remaining sections buried to connect to substations at Torness and Hawthorn Pit.  <\/p>\n\n<p>As well as boosting sustainability, EGL1 will help reduce dependence on imported gas and save more than \u00a3870m a year by avoiding offsets to wind generators. According to Ofgem&#8217;s Beatrice Filkin, the accelerated investment process allows progress to be made without compromising quality or economic benefits. <\/p>\n\n<p>This is just one of 26 critical projects fast-tracked under Ofgem\u2019s ASTI framework, designed to reduce construction times and ensure Britain achieves its 2030 renewable energy targets.
