The launching ceremony witnessed the presence of key figures such as Sebastian Westphal, Technical Director of SAL, and representatives from DNV Nanjing, highlighting the significance of the project.

Advances in shipbuilding

During the construction of this large-tonnage vessel , the Chinese shipyard implemented improvements based on previous experience with the first ship in the series. These optimizations allowed the time on the slipway to be reduced by 35% , thanks to scientific planning and precise management of the technical team. Scaffolding and assembly specialists made innovative adjustments, managing to meet strict deadlines and safety standards.

Designed with optimized efficiency, the FRIDA vessel incorporates a conventional propulsion system with two engines and one propeller , accompanied by energy-saving devices to improve operating economy . It is also equipped with two 800-ton cranes, ensuring its capacity for heavy-lift operations. In addition, its bulbous bow and side-thrust system contribute to stability and maneuverability on the high seas.

Innovation and technical challenges of the heavy-lift vessel

Building a ship of this calibre presents significant challenges. The structure includes multiple thickened plates in tight working areas, making assembly difficult. However, the Wuhu Shipyard team employed advanced technology and improved ventilation on the slipway to ensure construction was safe and efficient.

Furthermore, the adaptation of container legs to the deck, traditionally carried out on the quayside, was carried out in advance thanks to the strategic elimination of scaffolding. This innovation accelerated the processes, demonstrating an approach committed to efficiency.

The success of this project lies in the quality of the shipbuilding and the constant collaboration between the design department and the engineering team. This allowed the optimization of the cargo compartments and ensured a uniform distribution of the pontoons, improving the safety and performance of the vessel.

Launch of the second heavy-lift vessel “FRIDA”.
