This &#8220;space graveyard,&#8221; <strong>located more than 2,600 km from the nearest coast<\/strong> , is ideal for receiving the remains of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/satellites-for-climate-monitoring-and-carbon\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"176157\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">satellites<\/a><\/strong> , stations and other spacecraft at the end of their useful lives. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The origin of Point Nemo<\/h2>\n\n<p>Point Nemo, named after Captain Nemo, a character in Jules Verne&#8217;s &#8221; <em>20,000 Leagues Under the Sea<\/em> &#8220;, was determined in 1992 by engineer Hrvoje Lukatela.<\/p>\n\n<p>Its position makes it <strong>the furthest site from any land mass<\/strong> , minimising any risk to human populations or maritime traffic. Source: Wikipedia <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The spaceship graveyard will receive new guests<\/h2>\n\n<p>Since the 1970s, more than 260 spacecraft have been sent to Point Nemo, including stations such as the Soviet MIR. In the future, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/space-x-desorbit-the-international-space-station\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"167475\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Space Station<\/a><\/strong> is also expected to be deorbited here, given its mass and the care required to avoid any risk when entering the Earth&#8217;s atmosphere. <\/p>\n\n<p>Controlled reentry of spacecraft is carefully managed, <em>National Geographic<\/em> reports.
