The Isles of Scilly Steamship Group (ISSG) has held a traditional keel-laying ceremony for the new ships that will operate on the Penzance to the Isles of Scilly route<\/strong> . The event, held at the Piriou shipyard in Vietnam on 6 November, symbolises the official \u2018birth\u2019 of the Scillonian IV and Menawethan<\/strong> vessels, marking a crucial step forward in their construction process. <\/p>\n\n

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries from Britain and France, including the British Ambassador to Vietnam, Iain Frew, and the British Consul General, Alexandra Smith. Also present was Emmanuelle Pavillon-Grosser, the French Consul General, along with senior management from ISSG and the Piriou shipyard. As part of tradition, a coin was placed on the keel of the ship, a gesture believed to bring good luck to the ship and its crew. <\/p>\n\n

Keel laying gives way to modern shipbuilding<\/h2>\n\n

Judith Piper, ISSG\u2019s chief financial officer, praised the technical precision required to build these modern vessels. The Scillonian IV<\/strong> will be an advanced passenger ferry<\/a><\/strong> , while the Menawethan<\/strong> will serve as a crucial cargo vessel<\/a><\/strong> for the region. Both ships are being built simultaneously, using innovative methods that optimise time and resources. <\/p>\n\n
