Navantia<\/strong> has begun the improvement and development of the S-83 submarine<\/strong> , after installing the advanced Air Independent Propulsion<\/strong> ( AIP<\/em> ) system in one of its shipyards in Cartagena, Spain. This technological equipment makes the S80 class one of the most sophisticated submarine models in the world. <\/p>\n\n

Installation of the AIP system and other technologies<\/h2>\n\n

The AIP system<\/em> allows the submarine to generate hydrogen on board, using a process that uses bioethanol<\/strong> , an alcohol produced in an efficient and environmentally friendly manner. This hydrogen, together with oxygen stored on the submarine, is used to produce electricity, by means of a fuel cell, which recharges the S-83’s batteries<\/strong> and allows it to remain submerged up to two to three times longer. This adjustment promotes the sustainability and performance of submarines. <\/p>\n\n

One of the exceptional aspects of this technology is the ability to operate at any depth and in multiple operational conditions, giving the S-83 unparalleled flexibility in naval missions. This positions Navantia<\/a><\/strong> ‘s AIP system as the most advanced in its category. <\/p>\n\n

The S80 class submarines<\/strong> are the only ones in the world in the 3,000 ton range to possess this innovative AIP technology.
