Bureau Veritas, a leader in certification and quality assurance, has granted approval in principle (AiP) to PONANT for the design of its innovative hybrid passenger vessel, Swap2Zero<\/strong> . This concept seeks to transform the cruise industry with a focus on low carbon emissions and wind-assisted propulsion<\/a><\/strong> , marking a step forward in maritime sustainability. <\/p>\n\n

Design and features of the Swap2Zero hybrid vessel<\/h2>\n\n

Swap2Zero, designed specifically for transoceanic voyages, is 186.2 metres long<\/strong> and combines several renewable energy sources, including wind, solar and low-carbon fuels<\/a><\/strong> , with the aim of getting closer to zero emissions. This double-helix design prioritises energy efficiency and the use of sustainable resources. <\/p>\n\n

The vessel also integrates a range of advanced wind-assisted propulsion technologies to maximise its energy efficiency. Options considered include Solid Sail technology, which uses high-performance rigid sails, and the innovative Ayro Oceanwings technology<\/a><\/strong> , designed to optimise wind capture using automated inflatable sails. <\/p>\n\n

Wind propulsion plays a crucial role in the operation of the vessel, but is complemented by solar energy<\/a><\/strong> , hydrogen and fuels such as biomethane and e-methane, allowing it to operate for 30 days with 50% wind assistance<\/strong> or maintain 15 days of windless autonomy at a speed of 10 knots.<\/p>\n\n

In addition, the vessel features nearly 1,000 square metres of solar panels<\/strong> , hydrogen and solid oxide fuel cells<\/a><\/strong> , as well as dual-fuel engines capable of using biodiesel and biogas, meeting Safe Return to Port (SRtP) standards. An advanced carbon capture system, which allows CO\u2082 emissions to be stored or reused, completes the vessel\u2019s innovative design, as do heat and cold recovery systems. <\/p>\n\n

Bureau Veritas’ approval is in line with international regulations and classification standards, reflecting its commitment to decarbonisation and sustainability in the maritime sector. Mathieu Petiteau, Director of New Construction at PONANT, highlighted that Swap2Zero<\/a><\/strong> represents an opportunity to apply multiple sustainable technologies and also promotes a model of collaboration with regulatory bodies, manufacturers and shipyards. <\/p>\n\n
