French shipping company CMA CGM<\/strong> recently held a christening ceremony for its 2,000 TEU LNG-powered vessels, the CMA CGM Sintra<\/em> and the CMA CGM Altamira<\/em> . These new additions are the eighth and ninth in a series of ten vessels developed in collaboration with South Korea\u2019s Hyundai Mipo<\/strong> and designed especially for short-haul service routes in Northern Europe. <\/p>\n\n

The christening of two CMA CGM ships<\/h2>\n\n

The CMA CGM Sintra<\/em> departed Busan on 26 October and is heading to Europe via the EURAF3 service, while the CMA CGM Altamira is expected to arrive in Rotterdam on 10 December via the FAL3 service.<\/p>\n\n

Both vessels are designed to optimize fuel efficiency, with their inverted bulbous bow and dual 12 MW LNG-powered engines, with the ability to run on biogas derived from biological waste, which reduces CO\u2082 emissions by 67%.<\/p>\n\n

The design of this series of ships is the result of a collaboration between CMA CGM<\/a><\/strong> , the French shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique<\/em> and the Danish firm Odense Marine Technique<\/em> ( OMT<\/em> ). This team has optimized the model for the incorporation of the gas chain and a 1,053 cubic meter storage system, developed in cooperation with GTT, a company specializing in gas storage technologies. <\/p>\n\n

Each vessel is equipped with a 1 MW hydrogen fuel cell, an innovation that sets a new standard in the sector, and will be installed on the last ship in the series, scheduled for launch in January 2025. This additional technology makes it possible to further reduce the carbon footprint and move towards an energy transition in the maritime transport sector. <\/p>\n\n

Measuring 204.29 metres in length and 29.6 metres in width, these vessels stand out for their improvements in hydrodynamics and aerodynamics, which reduce fuel consumption by up to 15% on each voyage. CMA CGM has underlined its commitment to sustainability by integrating renewable energy solutions into its fleet, adapting its engines for future conversion to e-methane, a fuel produced from decarbonised hydrogen that reduces CO\u2082 emissions by 85%. <\/p>\n\n

The godmother of this ceremony was D\u00e9hia Djahnine, Senior Advisor of CMA CGM and expert in maritime financing<\/em> , who took a leading role in the acquisition of the company’s new vessels. With this expansion of its fleet, CMA CGM reaffirms its leadership in the move towards a greener and more technologically advanced maritime transport industry. <\/p>\n\n
