The world\u2019s first four autonomous, electric ferries<\/a><\/strong> , equipped with innovative EcoPellers propulsion systems, are in development for Fjord1, a Norwegian ferry operator. Built at the Tersan shipyard in Turkey and designed by HAV Design in Norway, the ferries will offer an emission-free transport experience and will also mark a turning point in connectivity and sustainability in maritime transport<\/a><\/strong> . <\/p>\n\n

How will autonomous ferries work?<\/h2>\n\n

Each ferry will be equipped with two SCHOTTEL SRE 340 L-Drive electric thrusters<\/a><\/strong> , specially designed to reduce both energy consumption and operating costs. These EcoPellers maximise hydrodynamic efficiency and eliminate the need for a top gear<\/strong> , thereby reducing mechanical loss and battery consumption. This contributes to an optimised range and a more sustainable operation on the Lavik-Oppedal route, where they will start operating in September 2026. <\/p>\n\n

The removal of top gear on the EcoPellers<\/a><\/strong> also allows for quieter and more comfortable sailing for passengers, minimising vibrations and noise. With capacity for 399 people, including 120 cars<\/strong> , the ferries offer an environmentally friendly and comfortable alternative on the Sognefjord, north of Bergen on Norway’s west coast.<\/p>\n\n

From 2027, these ferries will introduce automatic navigation, docking and autonomous crossing functions, with a remote controller on land to monitor the operation and manage any eventuality. In 2028, they will achieve full autonomy<\/strong> , being the pioneers in the implementation of these technologies on a regular commercial route.<\/p>\n\n
