Source: Mercedes-Benz Group <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Operation of the recycling plant<\/h2>\n\n<p>The plant uses an advanced mechanical-hydrometallurgical process that, unlike traditional methods, is more efficient in terms of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/microsoft-invests-in-cyclic-materials\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"172100\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">raw material recovery<\/a><\/strong> and also in energy consumption, with processing temperatures not exceeding 80\u00b0C. First, the battery modules are crushed to separate materials such as plastics, aluminium, copper and iron. Next, the active materials, known as \u201cblack matter\u201d, are extracted, containing valuable metals such as lithium, cobalt and nickel. These metals are recovered through a hydrometallurgical process, which uses chemical reactions at low temperatures to separate the components.   <\/p>\n\n<p>This method, in addition to being more efficient in the recovery of raw materials compared to pyrometallurgy, minimises energy consumption and reduces emissions. The company, together with several German universities, is also involved in research to improve battery recycling and logistics processes. In addition, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/mercedes-benz_ag_mercedesbenz-emobility-battery-activity-7254431455236251648-oGe7\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/mercedes-benz_ag_mercedesbenz-emobility-battery-activity-7254431455236251648-oGe7\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the plant is supplied with 100% renewable electricity<\/a><\/strong> and its roof has <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/avangrid-solar-panels-at-powell-creek\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"170921\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">solar panels<\/a><\/strong> <strong>that generate 350 kilowatts of clean energy.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n<p>During the inauguration, German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz praised the company\u2019s investment, highlighting the positive impact it will have on both the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/tesla-sweeps-the-us-auto-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"86849\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">automotive industry<\/a><\/strong> and efforts to achieve the country\u2019s climate goals.
