The SeaZero project<\/strong> , led by Hurtigruten<\/strong> in collaboration with VARD<\/strong> , has perfected the design of its second version of a coastal cruise ship, proposing to reduce further energy consumption, positioning it as a pioneer in maritime sustainability.<\/p>\n\n

This emission-free cruise ship relies on an integration of large 60-megawatt-hour batteries<\/strong> , retractable sails<\/strong> , and other cutting-edge technologies such as solar panels<\/a><\/strong> . These sails, known as OceanWings<\/a><\/strong> , have proven themselves in the shipping sector, and in this project could reduce energy consumption by an additional 10%. In addition, the solar panels will contribute savings of 2% to 3%. <\/p>\n\n

According to lead conceptual designer Torkild Skjong<\/strong> , the aim is to create a ship that meets future demands for sustainability and zero emissions. It also includes counter-rotating propellers<\/strong> to optimise propulsion and retractable thrusters that ensure manoeuvrability during port operations. <\/p>\n\n

At the same time, reducing hull resistance through air lubrication<\/strong> could generate additional energy savings of 5% to 10% after implementing the technique that uses bubbles to minimize the impact of surface friction.<\/p>\n\n

One of the SeaZero<\/strong> ‘s most advanced features is its focus on energy-consciousness. ” Smart cabins<\/em> ” will allow guests to monitor the energy usage of their space, managing heating and ventilation through a mobile app. <\/p>\n\n

Hurtigruten<\/strong> COO Gerry Larsson-Fedde stressed that the project will continue to evolve with model testing and design adjustments along the way, but underscored the importance of these innovations in moving towards a more sustainable future for the cruise industry.<\/p>\n\n
