Global logistics giant, A.P. Moller – Maersk, has unveiled its latest dual-fuel methanol vessel, the \u201cAlexandra Maersk\u201d<\/strong> . The christening ceremony took place at the Port of Felixstowe, UK and was attended by leading figures from the maritime sector<\/a><\/strong> , including the UK Maritime Minister, Mike Kane and representatives from the International Maritime Organization<\/a><\/strong> (IMO). <\/p>\n\n

About the “Alexandra Maersk”: the sixth methanol tanker<\/h2>\n\n

The \u201cAlexandra Maersk\u201d is the sixth vessel in its fleet designed to run on methanol<\/a><\/strong> , a fuel that promises to reduce greenhouse gas<\/a> emissions by up to 90%<\/strong> . The ship can carry more than 16,000 containers (TEU), positioning itself as one of the pillars of Maersk\u2019s strategy to reach net zero emissions by 2040. <\/p>\n\n

The company is known to have a tradition of naming its ships after members of the founding family. The ” Alexandra Maersk<\/strong> ” is named after Alexandra M\u00e6rsk-M\u00f8ller (1868-1953), the elder sister of A.P. M\u00f8ller, who was the founder of A.P. Moller \u2013 Maersk. <\/p>\n\n

The use of methanol as an alternative fuel is one of the most important steps in Maersk\u2019s efforts to decarbonise shipping<\/a><\/strong> . This type of fuel, which can reduce CO\u2082 emissions by 65% to 90%<\/strong> , is essential to achieving the company\u2019s sustainability goals. The 18 dual-fuel vessels planned for 2024 and 2025 are a clear example of this commitment. <\/p>\n\n

Primark and Maersk join forces to decarbonise maritime transport<\/h2>\n\n

Primark member Elaine Condon was chosen as the ship’s godmother, reflecting the close collaboration between the two companies on sustainability and green logistics.<\/p>\n\n

Primark CEO Pablo Marchant highlighted the value of the collaboration between the two companies to reduce emissions throughout the supply chain. Through initiatives such as Maersk’s ECO Delivery Ocean<\/a><\/strong> , Primark has already begun to replace fossil fuels<\/a><\/strong> with greener alternatives, reinforcing its commitment to halving its carbon emissions by 2030. <\/p>\n\n

Despite progress, Maersk stressed that much remains to be done. Maersk CEO Vicente Clerc urged the IMO to help close the price gap between fossil and green fuels, with the aim of making green alternatives accessible to the entire sector. <\/p>\n\n
