With a new $1 million grant from the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/meta-and-the-geothermal-energy-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"184173\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. Department of Energy<\/a><\/strong> , Roy and his team are looking to leverage the advantages of additive manufacturing to improve the efficiency and safety of these systems. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Does 3D printing tungsten reduce costs in nuclear energy?<\/h2>\n\n<p>Tungsten has been identified as an ideal material for the inner walls of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/articulo\/iron-silicate-effect-on-nuclear-fusion\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"articulo\" data-id=\"188129\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fusion reactors<\/a><\/strong> due to its ability to withstand high temperatures, erosion, and exposure to high-energy neutron radiation. However, working with this metal in the traditional way is expensive, as <strong>it is extremely hard and brittle<\/strong> . This is where <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/worlds-first-3d-printed-hotel\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"192745\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3D printing technology<\/a><\/strong> comes in. Using laser powder blowing directed energy deposition, researchers can fabricate tungsten alloys layer by layer, improving the process and reducing costs.   <\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>This project has the potential to transform the way we create components for nuclear energy. It is a collaborative effort between universities and national laboratories that can make a difference in the transition to cleaner and more efficient energy sources. <\/p>\n<cite>Roy said.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Furthermore, one of the most innovative aspects of the project is the use of computational simulations and physics-based models to complement the experiments. These tools, which include machine learning, will allow researchers to optimize experimental results and develop new, more fracture-resistant tungsten alloys. <\/p>\n\n<p>This research effort falls under the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epscorideafoundation.org\/about\/agencies\/doe-epscor\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.epscorideafoundation.org\/about\/agencies\/doe-epscor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of Energy\u2019s EPSCoR program<\/a><\/strong> , which has allocated $36 million to boost energy research across the country.
