This abundant and inexpensive metal could replace nickel and cobalt, minerals in high demand and value, with &#8220;manganese cathodes&#8221; integrated into batteries. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The use of manganese cathodes in lithium batteries<\/h2>\n\n<p>The study published in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41565-024-01787-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nature Nanotechnology<\/a><\/strong> shows that manganese can be used in new disordered rock salt ( <em>DRX<\/em> ) cathodes, a type of material that improves energy storage and distribution. Unlike previous studies, this new process allows \u201c <em>manganese particles in the cathodes to perform better at a larger size than expected<\/em> ,\u201d thus improving efficiency without consuming too much energy in their production. <\/p>\n\n<p>According to <strong>Berkeley Lab<\/strong> researcher Han-Ming Hau, using manganese would reduce costs and require less energy and time to produce than other elements currently used in commercial <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/largest-energy-storage-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"168618\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">batteries<\/a><\/strong> . In addition, the synthesis process developed by the team allows the fabrication of cathodes in just two days, much faster than current methods. <\/p>\n\n<p>Furthermore, manganese has demonstrated an impressive ability to form the internal structure of cathodes, creating a <strong>semi-ordered nanostructure<\/strong> that improves the electrochemical performance of the battery.
