{"id":189610,"date":"2024-09-22T06:54:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-22T10:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/?p=189610"},"modified":"2024-09-20T09:03:40","modified_gmt":"2024-09-20T13:03:40","slug":"bionic-human-body-hand-prosthesis-magnet","status":"publish","type":"noticias","link":"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/bionic-human-body-hand-prosthesis-magnet\/","title":{"rendered":"Italian scientists develop first magnetically controlled hand prosthesis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Researchers at the Sant&#8217;Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa have marked a new chapter in the history of prosthetics by developing the <strong>world&#8217;s first robotic hand controlled by magnets<\/strong>.\nThis breakthrough opens up a world of possibilities for amputees, such as a 34-year-old Italian man named Daniel, who was the first patient to use the system. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mia-Hand: A prosthesis that adapts to the human body<\/h2>\n\n<p>The prosthesis, known as <strong>Mia-Hand<\/strong>, is capable of reproducing the movements of a human hand and measuring the force needed to manipulate fragile objects.\nAll without wires or electrical connections, only by means of small magnets implanted in the muscles of the forearm.\nThese magnets, moving with muscle contraction, are able to transmit signals that an algorithm decodes to control the movement of the fingers.  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> \n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"La protesi del futuro\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SWhfCHoPS54?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n <\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">The prosthesis is capable of reproducing the movements of a human hand.\nSource: Sant&#8217;Anna School of Advanced Studies of Pisa. <\/p>\n\n<p>This has been achieved thanks to a system developed within the MYKI project, funded by the European Commission.<em>&#8220;There are 20 muscles in the forearm that control the hand<\/em>,&#8221; explained Christian Cipriani, professor in charge of the project.<em>&#8220;The innovation lies in harnessing these residual muscles so that the brain can continue to give movement commands, even after an amputation<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A step forward for state-of-the-art hand prostheses<\/h2>\n\n<p>The success of the experiment with Daniel has been so positive that the researchers are ready to <strong>expand testing to a <a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/bio-leg-the-electric-leg-prosthesis\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"105905\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wider group of amputees<\/a><\/strong>.\nThe system is especially valuable because it allows patients to perform everyday tasks such as opening jars, using tools, and controlling the force needed to hold delicate objects.\nAccording to Daniel, &#8220;<em>It&#8217;s like moving my hand again<\/em>.&#8221;
