{"id":187398,"date":"2024-09-11T16:28:58","date_gmt":"2024-09-11T20:28:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/noticias\/tepco-and-fukushima-plant-work\/"},"modified":"2024-09-11T16:51:33","modified_gmt":"2024-09-11T20:51:33","slug":"tepco-and-fukushima-plant-work","status":"publish","type":"noticias","link":"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/tepco-and-fukushima-plant-work\/","title":{"rendered":"TEPCO resumes debris removal at Fukushima Daiichi plant"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>TEPCO<em>(Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings<\/em>) has resumed attempts to remove debris from reactor number 2 at the<strong> Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant<\/strong>.\nThis reactor was damaged in 2011 due to the earthquake and tsunami, which caused a core meltdown.\nThe melted fuel recovery operation is part of a long and complicated decommissioning plan that could last decades.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Removal of debris from the Fukushima plant<\/h2>\n\n<p>The <strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/tepco-and-radioactive-waste-in-fukushima\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">test<\/a> extraction was suspended<\/strong> last August after it was discovered that the pipes needed to insert the recovery device were installed incorrectly.\nAfter resolving this incident, <strong>TEPCO <\/strong>was able to confirm that the pipes were reinstalled correctly and resumed the process on Tuesday.\nThe device, which is 22 meters long, is expected to remove less than 3 grams of radioactive debris in approximately two weeks.  <\/p>\n\n<p>This is the first successful attempt to recover fuel since the disaster, and while it is a small step forward, the task of extracting the remaining 880 tons of material remains a major challenge.\nThe operations are being conducted remotely, and future methods for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/robot-will-remove-nuclear-fuel-japan\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/noticias\/robot-retirara-el-combustible-nuclear-japon\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">removing the melted fuel are yet to be determined.<\/a><\/strong> have yet to be determined. <\/p>\n\n<p>The previous incident with the pipes reinforces the technical challenges of the project. <strong>TEPCO <\/strong>and contractor <strong>Mitsubishi Heavy Industries<\/strong> were responsible for this error, and following an investigation, corrective measures were implemented to prevent further failures at the facility.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"> \n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Robot will try to remove melted nuclear fuel from Japan&#039;s destroyed reactor\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vX0F3VeCvN4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n <\/div><\/figure>\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">A robot will remove melted nuclear fuel from the Japanese reactor.
