The state of California is leading an innovative “geothermal project” that promises a robust transition to future renewable energy by transforming old oil wells into geothermal<\/strong> solar energy storage systems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Geothermal storage in former oil wells<\/h2>\n\n

This project, known as GeoTES<\/em>, is led by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory<\/strong>(NREL<\/em>), in collaboration with other national laboratories such as Idaho and Lawrence Berkeley, and a private investment group.\nIt will take place in historic Kern County, a region known for its oil production since 1899. <\/p>\n\n

The GeoTES project<\/strong> integrates solar thermal energy with geothermal energy to store heat underground, using old oil fields as thermal batteries.\nDuring the day, solar energy is used to heat a fluid that is injected into a deep geothermal aquifer.\nThis stored heat can be extracted when needed to generate steam and, in turn, electricity for thousands of Californian homes. <\/p>\n\n

This methodical approach provides an efficient energy storage solution while maximizing the use of existing infrastructure, promoting sustainability and reducing the need for new construction.\nThe State of California is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2045, and sees this project as a key tool in achieving its climate goals. <\/p>\n\n

The implementation of the GeoTES project <\/h2>\n\n

The reuse of old oil wells can offer sustainable solutions in the energy transition.\nEurope is also exploring the potential of geothermal potential of geothermal energy<\/a><\/strong>California is positioned as a global example in energy storage innovation, competing with states such as Texas, among which remain at the forefront of clean technologies. <\/p>\n\n

GeoTES technology<\/strong> is similar in principle to a heat pump. heat pump<\/a><\/strong>.\nFor example, by achieving heat exchange with the subsoil, it allows to take advantage of the thermal stability of the subsoil.\nHowever, this method achieves higher efficiency and stability due to the continuous subway temperatures. <\/p>\n\n

With other similar projects in Texas and Illinois, the race to reuse oil infrastructure for renewable energy is on.\nSome companies, such as Quaise Energy<\/strong>, are designing technologies, such as the millimeter wave drill, to extract more energy from these geological reserves. <\/p>\n\n
