algorithms.\nHowever, many of the robotic platforms developed in recent decades have limitations that hinder their use in research environments. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advances made at Berkeley Humanoid<\/h2>\n\n<p>A group of researchers at the <strong>University of California at Berkeley<\/strong> have developed Berkeley Humanoid, a new robotic platform designed specifically to overcome these limitations and facilitate humanoid robotics research.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Berkeley Humanoid<\/strong> is a compact, low-cost, lightweight robot that has been created from scratch by installing custom mechanical and electrical components.\nThe research team, led by Qiayuan Liao, set out to develop an <strong>inexpensive,<\/strong> <strong>rugged<\/strong> <strong>platform<\/strong> with the goal of being easy to transport, handled by a single operator, and low maintenance.<em>&#8220;After conducting several experiments with commercially available robots, we realized some of their weaknesses<\/em>,&#8221; Liao said in an interview. &#8220;Some equipment is very expensive and some is not designed for learning-based control, which makes it fragile and difficult to repair.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n<p>The <strong>Berkeley Humanoid robot<\/strong>, featured in a paper published on the <strong>arXiv<\/strong> preprint server, has been designed to overcome these shortcomings.\nIn addition, it is equipped with high-performance actuators, a <strong>low-level drive system<\/strong> and a <strong>motor controller,<\/strong> the robot has demonstrated a strong ability to cope with multiple locomotion functions, even when controlled with a basic learning-based policy.\nDuring testing, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/quadruped-robot-w1-walks-on-two-legs\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"155316\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">robot<\/a> <\/strong>showed its ability to walk on different terrains, jump with one or two legs, and travel long distances on both urban and unpaved terrain.  <\/p>\n\n<p>&#8220;<em>The Berkeley humanoid is designed specifically for academic research rather than direct application in industry.\nWe want to accelerate algorithm development and experimental validation. <\/em>&#8220;said Liao.<\/p>\n\n<p>Initial tests have highlighted the great promise of Berkeley Humanoid, allowing it to walk dynamically with different styles of locomotion, while maintaining its stability on different types of terrain.\nLiao also mentioned that<strong> the team plans to add arms to the robot<\/strong> for manipulation-related research, as well as camera-based perception capabilities to improve its performance in more complex
