The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has approved Dominion Energy Virginia’s application to extend the operating licenses of its North Anna nuclear power plant for another 20 years.<\/strong> Located in Louisa County, Virginia, this plant operates two nuclear reactors<\/a><\/strong> that generate enough carbon-free electricity to power 500,000 homes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Eric Carr, the company’s nuclear director, highlighted the importance of this extension to Virginia’s energy sustainability:<\/p>\n\n

North Anna<\/strong> has been a reliable source of clean energy for more than 50 years.\nWith this extension, we will continue to provide safe, carbon-free electricity for the next generation. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

Dominion is investing in the modernization of the plant, which includes replacing generators, refurbishing critical systems and implementing improved procedures<\/strong> to ensure its safe and efficient operation.\nWith the renewed licenses, the nuclear plant’s reactors will operate until 2058 and 2060, respectively. <\/p>\n\n

This approval follows a previous one in 2021 for the Surry plant, reaffirming Dominion’s commitment to nuclear nuclear power<\/a><\/strong> as a pillar of its strategy toward net-zero emissions by 2050.\nTogether, North Anna and Surry generate 40% of Virginia’s electricity<\/strong> and account for approximately 90% of the state’s carbon-free power. <\/p>\n\n

Dominion also plans to apply for license extensions for other nuclear power plants. nuclear plants in South Carolina<\/a><\/strong> in South Carolina and Connecticut.<\/p>\n\n
