Shipbuilder Guangzhou Shipbuilding International<\/strong> (GSI) has completed the installation of a giant LNG tank, “Type B,” on a 16,000 TEU dual-fuel container ship being built for Mediterranean Shipping Company<\/strong> (MSC).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

With a capacity of 13,000 m3<\/sup> and weighing 1,200 tons, it is the largest Type B LNG fuel tank used in China.\nThis type of tank is essential for storing liquefied natural gas under controlled conditions, ensuring efficiency and safety in maritime operations.\nThe International Maritime Organization <\/strong>(IMO) classifies LNG tanks into different types, with Type B standing out for its spherical design and partial secondary barrier, making it ideal for large vessels. <\/p>\n\n

The GSI team, faced with high accuracy requirements, performed three checks prior to installation, ensuring that there were no anomalies during the lifting and landing process.<\/strong>\nThis technical reinforcement provides valuable experience for the construction of future feature vessels. <\/p>\n\n

The Mediterranean Shipping Company<\/strong> (MSC), which continues to expand its fleet with dual-fuel vessels, has been a strong advocate of LNG as a key fuel for the decarbonization of the maritime industry.\nWith the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, MSC has commissioned a total of 100 dual-fuel vessels, including 18 new containerships<\/a><\/strong>including 18 new containerships, all powered by LNG. <\/p>\n\n

MSC CEO Soren Toft has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to sustainability, mentioning that the fleet renewal includes the incorporation of alternative fuels<\/strong> such as bio-LNG<\/strong>.\nMSC has also joined the SEA LNG coalition, focused on exploring the potential of renewable synthetic LNG to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. <\/p>\n\n

MSC’<\/strong> s recent fleet capacity<\/strong> growth has reached 6 million TEUs, demonstrating the company’s leadership in the shipping industry.\nIn addition, the delivery of the MSC Juliette in July 2024, a 16,616-TEU container ship, is an example of the company’s continued effort to maintain its position in the global market. <\/p>\n\n
