{"id":182469,"date":"2024-08-23T16:05:01","date_gmt":"2024-08-23T20:05:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/noticias\/nasa-and-jaxa-with-asteroid-bennu-samples\/"},"modified":"2024-08-23T16:44:40","modified_gmt":"2024-08-23T20:44:40","slug":"nasa-and-jaxa-with-asteroid-bennu-samples","status":"publish","type":"noticias","link":"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/nasa-and-jaxa-with-asteroid-bennu-samples\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA shares samples of asteroid Bennu with JAXA in historic exchange"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>NASA <\/strong>has transferred samples of the asteroid Bennu to the <strong>Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency<\/strong><em>(JAXA<\/em>) as part of an international exchange of asteroid samples, strengthening scientific cooperation between the two space agencies.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Samples of the asteroid Bennu  <\/h2>\n\n<p>The sample was collected by <strong>NASA&#8217;<\/strong>s <strong>OSIRIS-REx mission<\/strong>, and officially handed over on August 22, 2024, during a ceremony held at JAXA&#8217;s campus in Sagamihara, Japan.\nThis exchange follows the transfer of a sample from the asteroid Ryugu in November 2021, when JAXA shared with NASA a portion of the material recovered by its <strong>Hayabusa2 spacecraft.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<p>Both missions share the same scientific goal:<strong> By trying to understand the origins of primitive asteroids and their potential embedded minerals<\/strong>, which can provide valuable information to find answers about the formations of the planets.<\/p>\n\n<p>Between each group of researchers, the efforts are notable, and expressed, as follows:<em>&#8220;We value our continued collaboration with JAXA on asteroid sample return missions<\/em>,&#8221; commented Kathleen Vander Kaaden, chief scientist for astromaterials preservation in NASA&#8217;s Science Mission Directorate in Washington.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The scientific value of space samples<\/h2>\n\n<p>NASA&#8217;s <strong>OSIRIS-REx<\/strong> space probe <strong>delivered 121.6 grams of material from Bennu<\/strong>.\nIn addition, as part of the agreement, NASA transferred 0.66 grams of the Bennu sample to JAXA, and a &#8220;contact pad&#8221; containing dust from the asteroid.\nAccording to the scientists, the sample will be analyzed by JAXA to understand, in detail, the similarities and differences between the <strong>Bennu<\/strong> and <strong>Ryugu<\/strong> <strong>asteroids<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n\n<p>The first investigations of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/capsule-samples-of-the-asteroid-bennu-nasa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bennu sample<\/a><\/strong> have revealed the presence of dust rich in <em>carbon<\/em>, <em>nitrogen<\/em>, <em>organic molecules<\/em>, <em>phosphorus-bearing minerals<\/em><strong> <\/strong>and <em>water<\/em>.\nThese discoveries could provide critical data on the essential components for life in the early solar system.\nIn addition, both <strong>Bennu <\/strong>and <strong>Ryugu <\/strong>are estimated to have come from an<em>&#8220;ancient progenitor object<\/em>&#8221; that formed beyond Saturn&#8217;s orbit and broke apart, transporting fragments to the inner solar system.  <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>JAXA<\/strong> <strong>Astromaterials Science Research Group<\/strong> Director Tomohiro Usui said, &#8220;Thank you for safely bringing the valuable asteroid samples from Bennu to Earth and then to Japan. Now it is our turn at JAXA.
