The Poseidon Project, one of the most relevant carbon capture and storage(CCS<\/strong>) efforts in the UK, has made progress with the successful mobilization of the offshore refurbishment platform, Petrodec HAEVA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carbon Catalyst’s Poseidon project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This platform is operational on the Leman Hotel wellhead platform in the southern North Sea, where it is being prepared for CO\u2082 injection operations.\nThe project, led by Perenco in partnership with. <\/em>Carbon Catalyst Ltd<\/strong>(CCL<\/em>), is being developed in the Perenco-operated Leman gas field in the southern sector of the UK North Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Poseidon project is based on the potential for CO2 storage<\/a><\/strong> storage potential in a combination of depleted gas reservoirs and saline aquifers, offering a robust solution for the decarbonization of the East Anglia, Greater London and South East regions of the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, this project began to take shape after obtaining a carbon storage license in the first competitive CCS licensing round organized by the North Sea Transition Authority<\/strong>.\nThis permit is essential to advance the injection of CO2 into the subway reservoirs of the Leman field.\nThe project’s infrastructure is supported by the Bacton terminal, operated by Perenco, which will process and send the CO2 to storage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poseidon’s schedule calls for injection operations to begin in 2029, with an initial capacity of 1.5 million tons of CO\u2082 per year(tpy<\/em>), increasing to 10 million tpy by 2030, and peaking at 40 million tpy in 2040.\nThe final investment decision is expected to be made in 2026, which will allow the project to move towards full implementation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perenco UK<\/strong> General Manager Jo White underlined the importance of this development, noting that the combination of various reservoir types in the North Sea mitigates risks and increases the chances of success.\nIn addition, White emphasized that Perenco’s vast experience in operating these fields, together with CCL’s technical expertise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the mobilization of the Petrodec HAEVA platform<\/strong>, the Poseidon Project not only represents a breakthrough in carbon mitigation, but also has the potential to generate jobs and synergies with infrastructure decommissioning work in the region.\nIn addition, a new strategic division within Perenco, led by Louis Hannecart, will oversee the CCS projects, ensuring that they are carried out efficiently and with the greatest possible positive impact. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
