The UK’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority<\/strong> (NDA) has announced plans to convert the former Chapelcross nuclear plant into a green energy center.\nThis project is aimed at the primary sourcing, production and storage of Scottish hydrogen. <\/p>\n\n

The Green Energy Center at Chapelcross<\/h2>\n\n

The project has been backed by an investment of more than \u00a315.3 million from the Scottish and UK governments.\nChapelcross, located near Annan and covering 210 hectares, is one of the sites currently being safely decommissioned by Nuclear Restoration Services<\/strong>(NRS<\/em>), a subsidiary of the NDA.\nThe nuclear plant since its cessation of operations in 2004 and following the dismantling of its cooling towers shortly thereafter, has remained in the process of restoration. <\/p>\n\n

The UK government urges that proposals for the strategic developer must be submitted by October 25, 2024, with the NDA planning to make the designation official in early 2025.\nThe development at Chapelcross aims to revitalize the local economy, and create new opportunities, jobs and skills in the new energy sector. <\/p>\n\n

NDA Executive Director David Peattie underscored the importance of the project, noting that freeing up land for reuse is one of the vital goals, with the aim of generating benefits for both local communities and the circular economy.\nCollaboration between the public and private sectors will be essential to carry out this project, Peattie said. <\/p>\n\n

In addition, Dumfries & Galloway Council<\/strong>, South of Scotland Enterprise<\/strong>(SOSE<\/em>), and Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal<\/strong> are collaborating with the NDA and NRS on this scheme.\nOn tracts of land adjacent to the main Chapelcross site, SOSE has been tasked with driving the creation of an Energy Transition Zone<\/strong>, which will be focused on generating jobs and attracting investment from clean and sustainable energy companies. <\/p>\n\n

SOSE Executive Director Jane Morrison-Ross expressed her commitment to this project, noting that the Chapelcross transformation is an essential step in moving the region toward an economy that prioritizes green energy production. green energy production.<\/a><\/strong>.\nMorrison-Ross emphasized the importance of working closely with project partners to maximize the potential of this prime location. <\/p>\n\n
