{"id":175210,"date":"2024-07-26T21:00:14","date_gmt":"2024-07-27T01:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/noticias\/mit-and-hydrogen-fuel-with-waste\/"},"modified":"2024-07-26T21:03:50","modified_gmt":"2024-07-27T01:03:50","slug":"mit-and-hydrogen-fuel-with-waste","status":"publish","type":"noticias","link":"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/mit-and-hydrogen-fuel-with-waste\/","title":{"rendered":"MIT researchers develop hydrogen fuel from soda cans, seawater and caffeine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A group of MIT engineers has <strong>discovered a method for producing hydrogen fuel<\/strong>.\nAn important gas today, it can be used to power engines and fuel cells without generating carbon emissions. <\/p>\n\n<p>Among the main ingredients: <strong>Aluminum<\/strong>, which is present in soda cans, and by combining pure aluminum with <strong>seawater<\/strong>, hydrogen is produced through a simple chemical reaction.\nThis reaction, although initially slow, is accelerated by the last ingredient, <strong>caffeine<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Development of a reactor that generates hydrogen fuel<\/h2>\n\n<p>In a study published in the journal <em>Cell Reports Physical Science<\/em>, the researchers describe<strong>&#8220;how the reaction can be accelerated by adding caffeine<\/strong>,&#8221; especially its active ingredient, <strong>imidazole<\/strong>. Experiments showed that hydrogen was produced more rapidly when pretreated aluminum pellets were placed in filtered seawater accompanied by imidazole.\nRelative to the two hours required without caffeine, the reaction was completed in only five minutes with its presence. <\/p>\n\n<p>The team is working on <strong>a reactor that could be used in ships and underwater vehicles<\/strong>.\nThis reactor would use recycled aluminum pellets mixed with small amounts of gallium indium and caffeine.\nBy integrating these ingredients with seawater, it would generate hydrogen on demand, eliminating the need to transport large tanks of hydrogen.  <\/p>\n\n<p>According to lead author Aly Kombargi, a PhD student in mechanical engineering at MIT, this technology is ideal for <strong>maritime applications due to the constant availability of seawater <\/strong>and the possibility of transporting aluminum instead of hydrogen fuel cells.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The research and sustainability approach<\/h2>\n\n<p>This project is led by Professor Douglas Hart, and he and his team at MIT are looking for some <strong>efficient and sustainable methods to produce hydrogen<\/strong>.\nThe use of aluminum, an abundant and stable material, is the focus of their research.\nThe problem is that &#8220;aluminum can only react with water in its pure state&#8221;.\nThat is, the <strong>formation of an oxide layer in contact with air prevents the reaction<\/strong>, which led the team to treat the aluminum with a gallium-indium alloy to maintain its purity.   <\/p>\n\n<p>To achieve this, the researchers <strong>created a method to recover gallium indium<\/strong> using ions present in seawater.\nThis finding allowed the alloy to be extracted and reused after the reaction, <strong>ensuring a continuous cycle of <a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/mit-a-functional-hydrogen-motorcycle\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"122904\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hydrogen production<\/a><\/strong>.
