The Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), located in Genoa, has developed a robot dog<\/a> called VERO<\/strong> that is dedicated to solving one of the most serious pollution problems: cigarette butts in the streets.\nDesigned in Claudio Semini’s laboratory, this robot dog is equipped with vacuum cleaners in its paws that allow it to efficiently collect cigarette waste<\/strong>, the second most common type of waste on our planet. <\/p>\n\n

Annually, of the six trillion cigarettes consumed<\/a><\/strong>approximately four billion end up on the ground, releasing more than 700 toxic chemicals that damage both ecosystems and urban aesthetics.\nWhile the ideal solution would be to change human behavior to prevent this pollution, VERO offers a technological alternative to address this environmental problem directly. <\/p>\n\n

How does this robot dog pick up trash?<\/h2>\n\n

VERO, which stands for Vacuum Equipped Robot, is designed on the basis of an AlienGo model from Unitree. AlienGo model from Unitree<\/a><\/strong> model with a commercial vacuum fitted to its rear.\nThe design includes hoses that extend to each leg and terminate in a 3D printed nozzle designed to optimize suction without restricting the robot’s mobility.\nThis unique configuration allows VERO to identify and pick up objects from the floor autonomously<\/strong>. <\/p>\n
