Japanese shipping company Mitsui OSK Lines, Ltd. (MOL) announced yesterday the completion of the Green Winds bulk carrier<\/strong>, a 63,896 DWT Ultramax vessel. Equipped with the innovative Wind Challenger wind propulsion system, the vessel was completed at the Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. facility in Saikai City, Nagasaki Prefecture.<\/p>\n\n

MOL Drybulk Ltd., a subsidiary of the MOL Group, will be in charge of operating this advanced vessel.<\/p>\n\n

Green Winds bulk carrier sets new standard<\/h2>\n\n

The Green Winds <\/strong>is the second of nine MOL Group vessels that are equipped or will be equipped with the Wind Challenger system. \n Wind Challenger system<\/a>\n<\/strong>system, now being the first bulk carrier in the world to adopt this technology<\/strong>. The telescoping rigid sails of this system transform wind energy into propulsive power, which could reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in the range of 7% to 16%, depending on various conditions and sea routes.<\/p>\n\n

MOL’s decarbonization strategy<\/h2>\n\n

As part of its environmental commitment, MOL has set ambitious targets in its “\n \n MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2<\/a>\n <\/strong>\n<\/em>“including achieving zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2050<\/strong>. One of the key strategies to meet these objectives is the widespread implementation of energy saving technologies. In this regard, the company plans to incorporate the Wind Challenger system on 25 ships by 2030 and 80 by 2035.<\/p>\n\n
