This figure is enough to supply around 6,000 homes with renewable gas.

Located at the Porgaporcs livestock farm in Vila-Sana (Lleida), the new facility will produce around 12 GWh of biomethane per year. This gas will be injected into the network of Nedgia, the natural gas distributor of the Naturgy Group, for consumption in homes and businesses.

With this plant, the company is making progress in its transformation and reinforcing Spain’s energy transition. In addition, the emission of 2,450 tons of CO₂ per year will be avoided.

Decarbonization with Naturgy biomethane plant

José Luis Gil, general manager of Naturgy Renewable Gases, underlines the importance of renewable gas in the decarbonization of the energy sector, especially in domestic consumption such as heating. The company, committed to this objective, already has three operational plants and multiple projects under development.

Biomethane is essential to achieve the country’s decarbonization goals. This gas, obtained from waste, can be distributed through the gas network and used in domestic boilers without the need for additional investment by households, says Raúl Suárez, CEO of Nedgia.

Biomethane potential and challenges in Spain

In addition to its environmental benefits, biomethane promotes the circular economy and supports rural environments. The production of this gas from waste contributes to the decarbonization of the primary sector and to meeting reduction and recycling targets. The by-product of its production, a digestate, can be used as organic fertilizer, thus closing the cycle of the circular economy.

Despite Spain’s great potential to produce biomethane, it currently lags behind countries such as France and Denmark.
A study by SEDIGAS indicates that Spain has a production capacity of 163 TWh
which would cover approximately 45% of the national demand for natural gas.

Biomethane and hydrogen projects in development

The company aims to lead the production and distribution of biomethane in Spain and to develop hydrogen as an energy vector in the future. With a broad portfolio of projects in various stages of development, the company has three operating plants and plans to open two more in Utiel (Valencia) and Utrera (Seville) in the near future.

Nedgia, the Naturgy Group’s gas distributor, is the leader in the sector in Spain, operating in 11 autonomous communities and 1,150 municipalities. With more than 5.5 million supply points, Nedgia distributes natural gas and renewable gases safely and efficiently through its extensive 57,000 km network.

Follow us on social networks and don’t miss any of our publications!

Source and photo: naturgy

Naturgy’s new biomethane plant will prevent the emission of 2,450 tons of CO2 per year, equivalent to what 1,000 cars emit during a year.

[13026,13044

post-168705","noticias","type-noticias","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","categoria_noticias-energy","categoria_noticias-new-energies
["GET
