{"id":165992,"date":"2024-06-22T15:33:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-22T19:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/?p=165992"},"modified":"2024-08-12T14:47:11","modified_gmt":"2024-08-12T18:47:11","slug":"modernize-ships-with-hydrogen-cells","status":"publish","type":"noticias","link":"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/modernize-ships-with-hydrogen-cells\/","title":{"rendered":"Companies modernize ships with hydrogen cells thanks to funding"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>TECO 2030, BLOM Maritime and Samskip were awarded an ENOVA grant to upgrade Samskip&#8217;s LNG carrier Kvitnos, incorporating fuel cells and using hydrogen as fuel.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kvitnos to be one of the ships with hydrogen cells<\/h2>\n\n<p>The project will focus on preparing the investment decision for the modernization of the Kvitnos, while facilitating long-term hydrogen fuel supply contracts, thanks to the vessel&#8217;s fixed route.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blommaritime.com\/es\/publications\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.blommaritime.com\/es\/publications\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BLOM Maritime<\/a><\/strong> will provide engineering support for the development of the documentation required for preliminary approval of the fuel cell and hydrogen solution.<\/p>\n\n<p>Samskip, for its part, already has a hydrogen-powered container ship under construction as part of the SeaShuttle project.\nThis new modernization initiative with the Kvitnos could become the company&#8217;s second hydrogen project. <\/p>\n\n<p><em>&#8220;With the delivery of our LNG-powered multipurpose vessels in 2015, Samskip already offered one of the most environmentally friendly cargo ships in the world, eliminating SOx emissions and drastically reducing NOx and CO\u2082 emissions,&#8221;<\/em> said Are Grathen, regional director of Samskip Norway and Sweden.<em>&#8220;With this grant from Enova and in close cooperation with fuel cell supplier TECO, we take an important step towards the total decarbonization of our operations<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Decarbonization of the maritime sector<\/h2>\n\n<p>The main objective of the project is to transform the Kvitnos, which currently operates between Rotterdam (Netherlands) and the Norwegian coast as far as Hammerfest, into a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/inspenet.com\/en\/news\/dnv-confirmed-performance-of-windwings\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"156223\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">zero-emission vessel <\/a><\/strong>by <strong>adopting hydrogen technology<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Our fuel cell technology represents an excellent option for modernizing the existing fleet, allowing them to operate with sustainable propulsion along the coast<\/em>,&#8221;
