The Google project is ready for the construction of the first submarine cable in Africa that will connect to Australia<\/strong> via fiber optics. This digital infrastructure will strengthen the company’s position in the face of major cloud service providers, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS<\/em>)<\/strong> and Microsoft’s Azure<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

The Umoja project, the submarine cable in Africa<\/h2>\n\n

Google’s upgrade announcement follows a series of service outages in Africa caused by faulty submarine cables<\/strong>. Given Google’s reliance on robust connectivity to deliver services to both consumers and businesses, this initiative to improve its offerings and reliability.<\/p>\n\n

The “Umoja” marine cable project<\/strong> starts in Kenya and extends the construction of Google’s Equian cable through Uganda, Rwanda, Congo, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa (with operational bases in Johannesburg), before crossing the entire ocean to Australia.<\/p>\n\n

The ground phases of the project have been completed in collaboration with Liquid Intelligent Technologies<\/strong>. On the other hand, the installation stage of the cable across the Indian Ocean to Perth, Australia, is underway, but with no confirmed date for completion.<\/p>\n\n

Improving marine infrastructure<\/h2>\n\n

Google Cloud’s vice president of global network infrastructure, Brian Quigley, detailed the importance of “Umoja” in improving connectivity between African countries and with the rest of the world. In addition, Quigley demonstrated the need to build alternative routes<\/strong> to existing ones to ensure a resilient network, according to the official blog post.<\/p>\n\n

Today, there are vast stretches of cables that cross seas and oceans<\/strong>, where major technology companies such as Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft are investing more and more to improve these infrastructures. This is due to a greater number of cables and data centers, to offer better services to companies, by performing faster, large information transfers and less latency.<\/p>\n\n

The closest submarine cable route to Google’s planned path for “Umoja” is SUB.CO’s Oman Australia Cable(OAC<\/em>). This cable was inaugurated in 2022 and is established between Oman and Perth, the Australian city.<\/p>\n\n

Google’s upcoming submarine cable projects<\/h2>\n\n

Google’<\/strong>s “Project Umoja” has not given a specific date for completion<\/strong>. However, according to experts in the construction of submarine cables, they estimate that it could take around three years from planning to the first phases of operation.<\/p>\n\n

He also announced plans to build one of the first \n subsea cables<\/a>\n a<\/a>\n rinos<\/a>\n<\/strong> connecting South America with Asia-Pacific, linking Chile with Australia via French Polynesia. An opportunity to improve the intercontinental.<\/p>\n\n
