The Witznitz solar park<\/b> in Germany, with a capacity of 605 megawatts (MW), has become the largest solar park in Europe<\/b>, surpassing the N\u00fa\u00f1ez photovoltaic plant in Spain.<\/p>\n\nThe capacity of the Witznitz solar park<\/h2>\n\n
This new facility, owned by German investment firm HANSAINVEST Real Assets<\/strong>, has been operational since late March and is expected to add an additional 45 MW to its current capacity by the summer of 2024.<\/p>\n\n Located in the Leipzig region, the solar farm is not subsidized by the state and sits on more than 500 hectares of the former Witznitz II open-cast lignite mine. It is estimated that the \n clean energy produced by the solar farm<\/strong>\n<\/a> will be able to supply around 200,000 homes and avoid the emission of approximately 250,000 tons of CO\u2082 annually.<\/p>\n\n Last year, a long-term power purchase agreement for around 600 MW of Witznitz’s clean energy was agreed with Shell Energy Europe. In addition, HANSAINVEST’s solar farm has announced that up to 10 hectares will<\/strong> initially be allocated for agrivoltaics<\/strong>, a very common technique that integrates agriculture and photovoltaic power generation.<\/p>\n\n Spain’s second largest solar farm, the 500 MW N\u00fa\u00f1ez de Balboa project, is located in the Extremadura region. \n MoveOn Energy<\/a>\n<\/strong>the developer of the Witznitz solar farm, plans to install an additional 45 MW of capacity on its own and connect it to the grid by the summer of 2024.
