Yara Clean Energy<\/a><\/strong> , in collaboration with North Sea Container Line<\/a><\/strong> , is developing the world’s first container ship that will run on ammonia as a propulsion source<\/strong> and is expected to be operational by 2026. This vessel, called Yara Eyde<\/strong> , has been designed to operate on the trade route between Norway and Europe.<\/p>\n\n Yara International, which marked an industry milestone with the Yara Birkeland, the world’s first self-driving electric container ship, continues its green commitment with the Yara Eyde. Maritime transport represents 2.8% of global carbon dioxide (CO 2<\/sub> ) emissions, equivalent to 706 million tons of CO 2<\/sub> in 2022. The use of pure ammonia on the Yara Eyde will contribute to the reduction of emissions from shipping<\/a><\/strong> .<\/p>\n\n \u201cAmmonia as a fuel does not pollute. When we produce it from renewable energies or with natural gas, where up to 95% of CO emissions2<\/sub> are captured and stored permanently, it will quickly be a good solution to reduce carbon emissions in the maritime sector,\u201d says Magnus Krogh Ankarstrand, head of Yara Clean Ammonia.<\/p>\n\n The Yara Eyde<\/strong> ship will extend the zero-emission value chain from Brevik to continental ports. This new vessel is expected to save around 11,000 tonnes of CO 2<\/sub> emissions each year. However, the companies have not shared specific details about the precise characteristics of the container ship proposed in the project.<\/p>\n\n Yara Clean Ammonia will supply ammonia without the use of fossil fuels or with virtually zero carbon emissions to Yara Eyde. In collaboration with Azane Fuel Solutions, a fuel storage and supply infrastructure is being established to ensure the availability of pure ammonia in Norwegian ports, and subsequently, in Scandinavian ports.<\/p>\n\n This supply system could also contribute to meeting Norway’s goal of reducing emissions in the maritime sector.
