The Government of Zimbabwe reported that it has obtained authorization from the United Nations (UN) and the neighboring country, Zambia, to carry out the construction of a hydroelectric dam in Victoria Falls. These are recognized as one of the impressive waterfalls in the world and are part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.<\/p>\n\n
“We had this energy project in mind for a long time and have been in discussions with the Government of Zambia and the UN for the past few years, until we finally got the green light to start,” said Zimbabwe’s<\/em> Minister of Energy and Manpower , Edgar Moyo.<\/p>\n\n As noted by Moyo, the project called “Batoka Gorge” has the participation of the Government of Zambia, since these falls, Victoria Falls, are shared by both countries.<\/p>\n\n ” Once we complete the energy project with Zambia, we will reduce the electricity shortage problems that we are currently experiencing in the country<\/em> ,” the minister added.<\/p>\n\n According to their statements, the construction of the project was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and certain challenges in obtaining financing. Some environmental advocates have expressed concern about the dam, which will cost $5 billion, equivalent to about \u20ac4.75 billion, and will have the capacity to generate 2,400 MW.<\/p>\n\n It is projected at a distance of approximately 50 km from the falls.
