Italian energy company Eni reported the discovery of a new gas field off the coast of Egypt in the eastern Mediterranean, according to a press release posted on its website.

“Eni announces a new significant gas discovery in the Nargis-1 exploratory well, located in the concession territory of the Egyptian Nargis platform in the eastern Mediterranean,” the company statement said.

The Egyptian platform concession is 1,800 square kilometers and according to Eni, the deposit can be developed through the company’s nearby facilities.

Eni has been operating in Egypt since 1954 and is currently the country’s leading producer of hydrocarbons, producing around 350,000 barrels of oil per day.
