Enel Peru and Siderperú, a Gerdau group company, have signed a contract through which the electricity multinational will supply energy from its renewable plants to the operation of the steel industry, for 12 years.

Thanks to this agreement, Enel will supply a capacity of 70 MW that will meet the electricity demand of Siderperú’s operations with energy of hydro, solar and wind origin, including the production of the Wayra Extension wind power plant and the Clemesi solar plant, which will come into operation in 2023, as announced by Enel. In this way, the steel company will significantly reduce its CO 2 emissions.

The agreement provides for the installation of a 500 KWp solar plant, which may be expanded for self-consumption, in the iron and steel complex of the steel company. This system will be installed by Enel X and is part of the solutions offered by the company in matters of distributed generation , a mechanism through which users can generate their own energy at various points of consumption or overcoming, increasing their savings in electricity billing and reliability of supply.

During the term of the contract, Enel will issue Siderperú I-REC certificates, which ensure that the energy supplied to its operations comes from renewable sources. I-REC is an international standardized renewable energy certificate and is accepted by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), one of the carbon footprint accounting standards most used by large companies in the world, as an instrument to demonstrate effective reductions in emissions in energy supply contracts.

Enel Peru, through Enel Green Power Peru, began construction of its two new renewable energy generation plants at the beginning of last June, the Clemesí solar power plant, in Moquegua, and the Wayra Extension wind power plant, in Ica. These power plants will add green energy to the National Interconnected Electric System (SEIN), thus contributing to the country’s energy transition.

The investment allocated for the Wayra Extension Wind Power Plant is US$ 188.5 million, and will include the installation of 30 wind turbines of 5.9 MW of unit power to achieve a total installed power of 177 MW. For its part, the Clemesi Solar Power Plant represents an investment of US$ 77.9 million and will include the installation of more than 200,000 bifacial solar panels that will take advantage of the existing solar potential in the area. With these, the plant will achieve an installed capacity of 122.59 MW.

Both plants are expected to start operating in 2023, avoiding the emission of 385,000 tons of CO 2 into the atmosphere. Wayra Extension and Clemesí join Wayra I and Rubí, the largest wind and solar power plants in the country, respectively.
