Duke Energy has announced its intention to build a new natural gas-fired power plant in Anderson County, South Carolina. This infrastructure is intended to meet population growth, industrial boom and energy demand in the state.

The natural gas plant for electricity supply

South Carolina is currently experiencing accelerated expansion in both demographics and economic development. As a result, increasing electric generating capacity is crucial. To meet the goals, Duke Energy plans to contribute 1,400 megawatts of power to the system through a modern power plant that will leverage state-of-the-art gas turbine technology, developed in partnership with GE Vernova.

The selected site is located on Highway 81 South near True Temper Road, occupying approximately 200 acres. This land is in close proximity to existing transmission infrastructure, which will allow for efficient integration with the regional grid. In addition,

This project is aligned with the Carolinas’ energy resource plan approved in 2024, and responds to the guidelines of the state’s Energy Security Act. The initiative has received explicit support from officials such as Governor Henry McMaster, Senate President Thomas Alexander and other Anderson County locals, who cite the importance of ensuring a reliable supply for industries, data centers and residential communities.

The formal application to the South Carolina Public Utilities Commission is expected this year. If approved, construction would begin in the summer of 2027 and commercial operation would begin in early 2031. Starting this week, residents and property owners near the site will receive detailed information about the project and mechanisms for submitting comments and feedback.

We are at a pivotal moment in planning for South Carolina’s reliable, affordable and resilient energy future.

By enacting the South Carolina Energy Security Act, Governor McMaster and the Legislature have established a comprehensive path for energy policy that will guide our state’s continued success for many years to come.

The commitment to build this state-of-the-art power plant in Anderson County is critical to the region’s strong energy future.
