The French multinational Air Liquide will build and subsequently operate an electrolyser with a capacity of 80 MW in the Antofagasta region, Chile, which will form part of the Antofagasta Renewable Energy and Mining (AMER) project.

The project will take advantage of Chile’s vast renewable energy sources, especially wind and solar energy, so this electrolyser would produce 30 tons per day of renewable hydrogen to supply the market, according to information from The Times.

Air Liquide signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with EDF Renewables, a world leader in renewable energy; Proman, one of the main producers of methanol; Sowitec, a developer of solar and wind energy; and COPEC, Chile’s fuel retailer.

The agreement is intended to support the production of renewable methanol, using renewable hydrogen as a feedstock, in a variety of industries including mobility, mining, rail and maritime.

This is one of six large-scale hydrogen projects selected by the Chilean development agency, the Production Development Corporation (Corfo), to establish a national hydrogen market and lead the region in the production of the energy carrier with low carbon levels.
